The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, it investigates the interactions among the adverb translations according to the subtypes of adverbs in English and the typological characteristics of Korean. Secondly, it attempts to compare the adverb translations by professional translators with the non-professional translators’. This paper is based on the syntactic classification of English adverbs proposed by Quirk et al.(1985). We focus on the matches and mismatches for adverb category in translated Korean texts and analyse whether the results on the matches and mismatches correlate with non-professional translators’ translations. For the analysis, 544 English adverbs and corresponding Korean translations are collected from an English source text and the Korean target text. It is shown that 81% of adjuncts, 67% of disjuncts, 52% of conjuncts and 53% of subjuncts are translated with adverb category. The part-of-speech shifts for adverbs, which clearly show the typological characteristics of Korean, are expressed in Korean translations with verbs, adjectives, nouns, postpositions and connective suffixes. Non-professional translators tend to translate English adverbs into Koran adverbs and their translation doesn’t seem to reflect Korean typological characteristics.
