This study reports on a preliminary investigation of intersentential discourse relations in Korean. Using story continuation experiment, we first investigated whether Korean speakers also show the causer biases of Implicit Causality (IC) verbs attested in other languages. We also examined coherence relations produced by Korean speakers in IC and non-IC contexts and compared them with those produced by English speakers in similar settings (Rohde 2008). We found subject- and object-biases associated with implicit causality verbs are replicated in Korean. The effects were, however, statistically only marginal largely due to Korean speakers’ relatively infrequent production of the explanation relation in the IC context. They produced more result- than explanation-relations after IC sentence prompts, as opposed to English speakers. We discussed what may possibly underlie these crosslinguistic differences, including grammatical differences such as word order and clausal linkage strategies in the two languages.
