This paper is a missiological study on the religious, political, and artistic aspects of the paintings with Christian themes of Akbar of the Mughal Period. Akbar’s interest in these paintings is different from what most Western scholars once thought, which is that superior Westerners influenced the inferior Mughal Emperor. On the contrary, Akbar took the initiative with his professional connoisseurship and serious study of Christianity and its doctrines.
Akbar was an unorthodox Muslim and established Din-i Ilahi as a world-religion, which sought universal truth amongst diverse religion through reason. Therefore, his interests in paintings with Christian themes was not for his faith in Christianity, but for his interests in Christian iconography itself. Since conservative Islam prohibited God’s representation in figural images, Akbar used Christian iconography such as Jesus, Mary, and the saints for his expression of Islams’narratives and doctrines.
As a Muslim who was from the minor ruling class at that time, Akbar had to control and harmonize with Hinduists who were a major subordinated class. Additionally, he focused on a painting’s devotional function and its sanctification of a person with icons. He also accepted Western art’s themes and styles because of his interests in new style, just like he accepted and assimilated the other styles such as Persian, Indian traditional Rajput, Jain, etc.
In conclusion, Akbar’s Christian paintings made in the Mughal palaces did not come from his religious and conversional interests, but rather were used for unifying & controlling Mughal people who had various religious and political positions - eventually fortifying his kingship associated with divinely bestowed power.
