Are philosophical dialogues possible or relevant in catastrophic situations? What does a counselor know? Can philosophy help to understand catastrophic experience? Taking the Biblical parabola of Job as a model, I suggest to make a distinction between the long process of Job’s reorientation in his world after the catastrophe, and the immediate post-catastrophic situation, in which Job is in great need of supporting others, and often has to deal with deceitful “friends”, those professional and non-professional helpers, who sometime “darken counsel” with “words without knowledge”. After the catastrophe Job will have to find his personal way in a new territory. A philosophical constructive dialogue in due course may give support at times of doubts and reassessments, offer options, enlarge and lighten the horizons of the searching Job. In the immediate post-catastrophic situation such conversations are not to the point. What is needed is a loving and humble support, with all the power that critical philosophy may provide, against Job’s “friends”, their explanations and pretended knowledge. The paper is based on my observations in a neural rehabilitation center and conversations with inmates, professional stuff, family members and visitors. The inmates, mostly victims of road accidents, were at that time partially or completely paralyzed.
