This paper is the first research about the ceramics collection of Yi Royal-Family Museum.
This finding has significant implications in that a total of 2,573 ceramics, collected from 1908 to 1945, have been analyzed the whole period of Yi-Royal Family Museum’s collection, from the first year of the collection to Korea’s liberation from Japan. The list of collected ceramics of Yi Royal-Family Museum, which is classified as ‘Deoksupoum(德壽品)’ of National Museum of Korea, have details including image, name, nationality/period, path of collection(purchase/donation), collected date, collected source(seller), and price. It attempts to examine the base data research and focuses on nationality and compositional inclination by types.
In the beginning, the volume of collection was concentrated on Goryeo porcelain. It was supported by a lot of memoirs that the establishment of the Yi Royal-Family museum was motivated by the Japanese colonial rulers’ enthusiastic collection of Goryeo porcelain, accepting ‘Chinoiserie’ of the west. Unlike their inclination to Goryeo porcelain in the first year, Goryeo, Joseon, and Chinese porcelain were evenly collected afterwards. The collection has even distribution not only by nationality/period in composition with an action of even collecting several Japanese porcelains, but also by different usages such as bowl (wan), bottle, pot, tray, and plate to show similarities among Asian peoples in ceramic culture. This may support Japanese invasion of the Asian countries after Russo-Japanese War by using the ideology of Asianism on collection policy of artifacts. Also, the paper for the first time analyzed national aspects (Japanese/Korean) of 129 curio collectors who had sold ceramics during the period, price change of each type of ceramics, and influences of Yi Royal-Family collection of artifacts on antique market geography during Japanese occupation period.
In conclusion, the ceramic collection of Yi Royal-Family Museum contributed to distort the structure of the market, such as accelerating the monopoly of Japanese sellers in antique market, excluding Koreans, and soaring prices of Goryeo ceramics.
