This article examines on the basis of the Second Meditation the emotional and singular character of the self-awareness of the Cartesian Meditations. For that, this article first examines J. Broughton"s interpretation, which emphasize the formal and general character of the self-awareness of Meditations. Broughton"s interpretation is not in itself wrong, but neglects the singular nature of the subject. On the other hand, this article by the examination of the First and Second Meditations shows the close relation that the singularity of the consciousness has with the problem of emtions. And, based on these remarks, it examines how the emotions of “jealousy,” “admiration,” and “shame” are used in the First and Second Meditations.
Then, this article shows that the analysis of the piece of wax implicitly affirms the emotional singularity of self-awareness. But for that it must be understood that this analysis is an eidetic reduction in two ways. In other words, this analysis is at once the eidetic reduction of an individual body and the eidetic reduction of an individual mind. This reduction, while distinguishing the body from the sensations, does not completely suppress the sensations. Analogically, the same eidetic reduction on the mind distinguishes the mind from the emotions without, however, removing emotions from the mind. Thus, the example of wax asserts that emotions constitute the singularity of the mind; in the same way that sensations constitute the singularity of bodies.
