In observing the current international trend in the education system of 50-plus nations towards the adoption of a [5 day school week], a similar transformation appears an inevitable certainty for the Korean primary and secondary schools. The implementation of the 5 day school week commands strong demand as such change may offer one avenue to overcome the current crisis found in the Korean education system. In order for the 5 day school week to be implemented in the Korean society, the following issues will need to be resolved: 1. The adoption of the 5 day school week will require sufficient preparatory period during which to implement the 5 day school week scheme in stages. 2. In order for the 5 day school week to operate, a 5 day work week must be instituted within the Korean society. 3. An operation of the 5 day school week necessitates a new educational outlook, especially an improvement in the present college admission process. 4. Conducting a detailed analysis of the operation of a 5 day school week in other nations prior to planning and implementing the 5 day school week in the Korean schools. 5. In preparing for the adoption of the 5 day school week, a change in the current educational process is needed, including a decrease in the number of courses the students are currently required to take. 6. For a successful operation of the 5 day school week, the schools, family, and society in general must form a cooperative network. 7. The students` activities during the school vacation should correlate with their educational activities. 8. For the 5 day school week to be firmly established, the individual schools should be granted the freedom to manage their curricula and the parents should be endowed with greater participation opportunities in their children`s education process.
