The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence and adatpability as the intensity index of MVC<SUB>EMG</SUB> on middle cerebral velocity (MCA V<SUB>mean</SUB>) during isometric strength type exercise. Fourteen healthy mael (24.1±1.4yrs) were asked to perform the 45°knee extension isometric ocntraction for 60 seconds. In random order, all participants performed three times the isometric exercise of 100%, 80% and 60% MVC determined by root mean square (RMS) of EMG at right rectus femoris muscle with a week interval. Each participant was asked to conduct and maintain the predetermined exact intensity of %M VCEMG confirming the figures on a monitor. MCA V<SUB>mean</SUB> was measured at rest, during exercise, immediately after exericse, 30 seconds recovery, 60 seconds recovery and 2 minutes recovery using transcranial-Dopple rsonography. All data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA (3 intensities x 6 times) with repeated measures. The results of this study are as follows. 1) MCA V<SUB>mean</SUB> in 80% MVCEMG was significantly higher than MCA Vmean in 60% MVCEMG (110±19 vs. 89±19 cm/s, p<.05) immediately after exercise. 2) MCA V<SUB>mean</SUB> in 100% MVCEMG was significantly higher than MCA V<SUB>mean</SUB> at 60% MVC<SUB>EMG</SUB> in 30 second recovery (97±14 vs. 77±10cm/s, p<.05) and 60 seconds recovery (97±16 vs. 73±12cm/s, p<.05). 3) Heart rate in 100% MVC<SUB>EMG</SUB> was significantly higher than that in 80%, 60% MVC<SUB>EMG</SUB> at immediately after exercise (128±26 vs. 106±15, 97±10 beats/min, p<.01) and at 30 second recovery (102±18 vs. 87±12, 80±9 beats/min, p<.05). In this study, we found that isometric exercise intensit yup to ~ 80% of MVC<SUB>EMG</SUB> might induce the elevation of MCAV<SUB>mean</SUB> during exertion and the increase of MCAV<SUB>mean</SUB> at 80% exercise intensity might be higher than that of the maximal isometric intensity.
