In After The Fall Miller is concerned with individual isolation in capitalism, McCarthyism, and Nazi’s totalitarianism. He criticizes not only the death of love in human relationship and the personal betrayal through the fear of relentless torture in the witch-hunt of the fifties, but also the commonness of evil in the contemporary society through the metaphor of the watch tower. What is significant is that in this play Miller’s ethics shows much in common with Levinas’s philosophy of the other. Levinas argues that the presentation of the other to me exceeds all idea of the other in me. Levinas is afraid of the fact that the totalitarian society tries to wipe out all otherness by all-encompassing and totalizing thought. So this paper aims to explore Miller’s ethics especially through the concept of the forgetfulness of the other defined by Levinas, for this is the key word through which Miller denotes how deeply the commonness of evil is rooted at the heart of human beings in modern society. Miller questions the human condition of modern society in which the subject obliterates whatever stands in the way, thus destroying the other. Like Levinas, he sees that the imperialism of the ego is the very cause of the death of the other.
