The construction of express rails is significant in terms of time and space and promotes the local economy as all regions with express rail stations have developed complex stations and the station spheres to reorganize the urban spaces and strengthen the competitiveness. As railroad stations are the centers of railroad traffic, a comprehensive plan considering the surrounding areas and traffic resources when developing a complex station for urban development. The complex station development plan should be multilateral to boost the local economy by expanding the functions of the station spheres.
As you can see in the cases of complex stations in Japan and Europe, the complex railroad station and station sphere development projects abroad have multilaterally arranged residential facilities, commercial facilities, business facilities, public facilities, accommodations, and entertainment facilities. Therefore, complex station development projects in Korea should also establish multilateral development plans to connect to the development of surrounding areas. The development of complex stations should no longer concentrate on the commercial facilities as seen with the private-funded station development projects in Korea and establish multilateral complex station development plans based on the analysis of urban planning factors considering the potentials of station sphere development for urban restoration.
The complex stations of railroads should be the centers of traffic with the infrastructure of urban living with direct accessibility to stations, multilateral land use, prevention of slumism, urban planning to reorganize the urban structure around the stations, and landscaping. Also, multilateral transit systems should be established to provide points of interaction and public spaces for the local community. The complex stations should fulfill multilateral and detailed functions with the facilities that are housed within the stations.
