The aim of this paper is to examine the poems about skylark, cuckoo and nightingale of British romantic poets on the basis of Gaston Bachelard’s poetics of air and space. Bachelard has investigated poems of William Blake and P. B. Shelley. However, the article compares actual bird-poems of William Wordsworth, Shelley and John Keats in detail. In “To a Skylark” by Wordsworth, the imagery of bird soaring to the sky and falling into earth is well-balanced, while in “To the Cuckoo”, the bird acts as a catalyst that creates newly present place by reviving childhood. In “To a Skylark” by Shelly, whom Bachelard calls “a poet of aerial materiality,” the bird is expressed in a variety of metaphors with the extremity and sublimity of emotion and jubilance. Shelley puts great value on the continuity of imagery regardless of complete or incomplete fancy and imagination. Lastly, “Ode to a Nightingale” by Keats proves his agony and anxiety of real life and poetic life. If Bachelard’s aerial reverie is applied to these poems, the skylark poems have the verticality of space while the poems of cuckoo and nightingale have the horizontality of space.
