This essay will read the Ode in the perspective of New Historicism, differently from the traditional readings that interpret the Ode as commending the influence of nature on the poet’s soul. The Ode was written March 27, 1802, the day which concluded the negotiations of the Peace of Amiens. The treaty in favor of France’s militarism proved to Wordsworth that the ideals of the Revolution were betrayed. The Ode was written to reinterpret his experience of the Revolution, which seemed a historical failure. So the Ode tends to displace and conceal the poet’s experience of the Revolution through its use of allegory and symbols. The failure of the Revolution is displaced as the poet’s personal loss. In stanzas 5-11, Wordsworth deconstructs the ideals of the Revolution and the Enlightenment. In conclusion, the Ode was written to erase the poet’s experience of the Revolution and defend his love of nature and human heart as an alternative for the ideals of the failed Revolution.
