This study was conducted to determine significant predictors of dietary behaviors among Korean women by their menopausal status (Pre-, Peri-, and Post menopause). A convenience sampling method was used to select study participants (n=701 women). A self-constructed questionnaire was employed to collect information on participants’ health and lifestyle, dietary behaviors, dietary supplement use, and marital, climacteric and socio-demographic characteristics. The dietary behavior scores (DS) were assessed by averaging 20 questions based on meal regularity, food variety, moderation, and efforts. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify main predictors of DS. The DS of Post group (2.80±0.30) was higher than that of Peri group (2.70±0.28, p<0.01). The Peri (71.7%) and Post groups (70.7%) were more likely to use dietary supplements than the Pre group (57.5%, p=0.001). Frequency of family meals, self-rated health status, and marital intimacy appeared to be three common positive predictors of DS, regardless of menopausal status. Frequency of drinking, depression, and frequency of eating alone negatively predicted the subjects’ DS. Moreover, the negative impact of depression was more prominent in the Post group. Frequency of drinking led to lower DS in the Pre and Peri groups. The findings suggest that dietary behavior of women at different menopausal status can be better understood by dealing with not only dietary and health characteristics but also familial and mental factors.
