Elderly people who are sick or need care are paying a lot of costs and are burdening the German society. These elderly people are the main consumers of the achievements in the medical and nursing field, but over time, they have difficulty financing themselves to take advantage of the performance of such healthcare. For this reason, the German society is constantly contemplating ways to overcome the problem of increasing the number of elderly people in the national economy. Considering these problems in Germany, I will examine the discussion of the dying of the elderly people, which has been attracting much attention in German society for several years, in the context of cultural history. And at this time, I will focus on euthanasia.
If the "right-to-die" movement that was formed in the United States in the 1930s had not been stopped by the Nazi euthanasia experience during its development, the human right to death, which had long ago been decided on its own, may have been carried through in Germany. But as a result, this “right to die” movement had to start again in the late 20th century. The right to decide for death on your own behalf is appealing to many, and has the power to appeal. But where can a boundary line be made to distinguish between self-determination and others? Where does it come from and the right to decide for yourself on your own terms? Should elderly people live with too long a simple, bad conscience? Can euthanasia by self-determination be a good death? And when can a moral obligation for a dying age arise? These questions, these ideas and plans, have already existed for a long time in cultural history.
