This article studied on the Korean king of Gojong’ Northern diplomacy, caused by the Far Eastern Expedition of Russian Fleet, under the command of admiral Lesovskii, former minister of Russian Navy. Admiral Lesovskii’s expedition to the Far East had started, when the Ili crisis got to the culmination between Russia and China, caused by Ili problem. Although Ili crisis was an issue of Russo-Chinese border trade in Xinjiang Province of Ching empire, it was remained such a typical case as XinJiang version of Anglo-Russian confrontation. As a result, China, instead of Britain, played the role as a checker and resisted to the Russian south forwarding policy.
As can be seen in the case of Russian Baltic fleet in the Russo-Japanese war, the Far Eastern Expedition of Lesovskii fleet had also a great influence on the outcome of confrontation as well as foreign policy of Korean government. It seems that Lesovskii fleet, gathered in the Far East with 23 battle ship, was the prototype of Baltic Fleet. Lesovskii fleet, aimed at preparing the Russo-Chinese war, indirectly provided a chance for Gojong government to form a more concrete Northern policy included approaching to Russia. This study explores further possible explanations of the role of Lesovskii fleet to resolve the border dispute between Russia and China and how it interacted with Gojong’s Northern policy that established diplomatic relations with Russia.
