Articulatory-phonological development takes the most time in speech and language development. Usually, /s/ and /s*/ are acquired last and many preschool children have articulation problems with these alveolar fricatives. Since articulation therapy requires repetitive training through the formation and acquisition stages, a child"s level of fatigue affects its result. Also, a child"s successful experience in the training is very important to maximize the success of therapy. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to compare the acquisition process of /s/ and /s*/ with different vowel environments to find out the most effective approach for clinicians to use. 64 children, aged of 4-7 years, who live in Busan or Gyeongnam area participated in this study. The CV syllable structures consisting of nonsense words were used in the examination. The nonsense words were combined with the two consonants, /s/ and /s*/, and the vowel environment including /a, i, u, e, o, ʌ, ɯ/. Each child listened to the sample sounds first and followed after. Each session took approximately 10 to 15 minutes and all the sessions were recorded for later analysis. Each session was evaluated based on the target articulation score. The differences among the ages and the syllable structures were analyzed by using the two-way ANOVA. The results of the present study as follows: First, the accuracy of both /s/ and /s*/ was higher with increase in age. Second, the most accurate articulation of both /s/ and /s*/ was elicited in front of vowel /i/ in both CV. Therefore, the results of the present study suggest that clinicians should start from CV syllable structure with the vowel environment of /i/ or /euɯ/ to elicit more accurate articulation of /s/ and /s*/.
