This paper discusses whether Lakoff’s women’s language is a ‘powerless language’ or it is indeed a women’s language. It classifies the data extracted from the ICE-GB into four groups based on the gender and education backgrounds of speakers and writers, and compares the frequencies of tag questions and intensifiers used in each group. The findings show that female speakers use more tag questions than male speakers, both in the spoken texts and in the written texts, while female speakers use more intensifiers than male speakers do, only in the spoken texts. The results demonstrate that, in general, the educational backgrounds of speakers and writers do not affect the frequency ratios of tag questions and intensifiers, both in the spoken texts and in the written texts. It can therefore be concluded that the findings in the spoken texts provide a conclusive statistical support for the difference theory which asserts that women use more women’s language features than men to promote positive connection and rapport.
