Large-scale discount stores as an innovation of retailing business have the dominant position in today`s retail environment. Since they began to appear in Korean retailing market in 1993, they have grown very rapidly. The purposes of this paper are to describe the growth pattern and analyze spatial diffusion process of large-scale discount stores. This study examined the diffusion pattern of large-scale discount stores through time-space. And this paper tried to investigate the determinants affecting the diffusion process of large-scale discount stores using the logit regression model. The diffusion pattern is determined by the flow of information about the innovation among cities. The diffusion process of large-scale discount stores involves two possibilities-contagious diffusion and hierarchical diffusion. Large-scale discount stores tend to diffuse in a more contagious manner at the early majority stage. But once the innovation has reached the late majority stage, hierarchical diffusion is more predominant. In general, the bigger and closer the neighbors, the greater the opportunities to adopt the innovation. The result of logistic regression analysis showed that size of the city is the most important and dominant explanatory variable in the early stage of diffusion process. However once the diffusion has filtered down to medium cities, economic variables such as income per capita and its growth rate became important in the later stage of diffusion process.
