At the dawn of Regional Science in Korea, author is obliged to take on the old puzzle, tampered with as a student of Regional Science Department at Penn over 15 years ago, "region" and "science". Regional Science is a study of people, their relations and matters. Region is a bowl carrying all those. So the bowl should be designed with scrutiny to take what it should. So region may be "banal", but the effort to define the region is not. "Timeless space" is no less "bias" than "spaceless time". In the world of relativity of time and space, regional scientists with limits and constraints in his life should only trade one off for the other. So should one trade time for the "essence", others do the opposite. Time is essence in life as space in Regional Science. In this paper, the concept of region is reexamined on the ground of logical consistency and practicality. Region should be viewed as a reflection of historically changing spatial organization of society. The scope and methodology of regional science is yet to be determined progressively. The students and practitioners in the field of regional science in Korea, as the rest of regional scientists elsewhere, are priviliged to participate in developing theories and methodologies. However, the scope of this field seems to be too broad in the current context. Author advocates the scope of regional science to be within a rather narrowly defined area of spatial organization with social and economic policy implications.
