In this study, we introduced a testing instrument that can be employed in a wide range of SLA research and practices, providing with substantial evidence for its usefulness. We report on the development and validation processes of a C-test. A C-test is a short, paperbased test to measure students’ proficiencies without time and space constraints. Due to this practicality it has been popularly used as a measure of linguistic proficiency in language research. However, previously developed and published tests were often criticized for not enabling researchers to discriminate among learners. The tests were either too difficult or easy for the test-takers, which made it difficult to discriminate among learners of various proficiency levels. In order to overcome this limitation, we developed a test employing texts representing various comprehensibility levels. The results showed that most of the test items exhibited desirable item discrimination values. Despite being a short test, the brevity was found to be practical and the researchers could rely on the results.
