This study examines the significance of eco-literature in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Ecology and eco-literature show critical disposition in technological civilization since it has been producing anti-ecological results until now. However, bio-mimicry, one of the main technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, is significant in that it has a similar nature with ecology.
Bio-mimicry is an applied engineering technique inspired by biological functions and mechanisms of living organisms. The basic principle of bio-mimicry can be organized into eight categories by summing up four characteristics of nature and four attitudes toward nature. The four characteristics of nature are self-sufficiency, cooperativeness, locality and form functionality of nature, where the other four attitudes toward nature found by biomimetic scientists consist of respect towards nature, the act of seeing nature’s phenomena and creation as being of providence, a supression of one’s desire for nature, and feeling an obligation to aim for better future of men and nature as being a part of nature itself.
As a result of comparing these fundamental principles with ecopoetry, it was confirmed that each fundamental principle acts as a key problem in the work of ecological poetry. Especially, it was found that the awareness of the eco-poets who see and shape the eco-centered providence working in the phenomenon of nature are almost in agreement with biomimetic scientists.
If satisfactory results are achieved in bio-mimicry technology, it can bring greater benefits than any existing technology while minimizing environmental losses. Given the fact that the suppression of economic desire is a major constraint on the individual’s ecological centered practice, bio-mimicry technology will also contribute greatly to the ecological centered practice of economic efficiency of bio-mimicry.
Eco-literature will complement each other without obstructing the development of bio-mimicry technology in terms of contributing to the desirable awareness of individuals.

이 연구는 4차 산업혁명 시대에 생태문학의 의의를 진단한 것이다. 지금까지 기술문명이 반 생태적 결과를 낳았기 때문에 생태학과 생태문학은 기술문명에 비판적인 성향을 보인다. 그런데 4차 산업혁명의 주요 기술 중 하나인 생체모방은 생태학과 유사한 성격을 지닌다는 점에서 문제적이다.
생체모방은 자연계에 존재하는 생물의 생체적 기능과 메커니즘에서 영감을 얻어 공학적으로 응용하는 기술이다. 생체모방의 근본원리는 자연의 성격에서 도출한 4개와 자연을 대하는 태도에서 찾은 4개를 더하여 모두 8개로 정리할 수 있다. 먼저 자연의 성격으로 도출한 것으로서 자연의 자족성, 자연의 협동성, 자연의 지역성, 형태의 기능성이 있고, 생체모방학자들이 자연을 대하는 태도에서 찾은 것으로서 자연에 대한 존중감, 자연의 현상과 피조물을 섭리를 지닌 존재로 보고 그것을 찾으려는 태도, 자연에 대한 욕망 자제, 자연의 일부로서 인간과 자연의 건강한 미래를 지향하는 임무 의식이 있다.
이러한 근본원리를 생태시와 비교하면서 고찰한 결과 각각의 근본원리가 생태시 작품의 핵심 문제의식으로 작용하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 자연의 현상 속에 작동하는 생태 중심적 섭리를 간파하고 형상화하는 생태시인의 문제의식과 생태모방학자의 문제의식이 거의 일치함을 알 수 있었다.
생체모방 기술에서 만족할만한 성과가 나온다면 환경 손실을 최소한으로 하면서 기존의 어느 기술보다 큰 이익을 가져올 수 있다. 경제적 욕망을 억제해야 한다는 점이 개인의 생태 중심적 실천에 큰 제약이 되었다는 점을 고려할 때 생체모방의 경제성의 생태 중심적 실천에도 크게 기여할 것이다.
생태문학은 개인의 바람직한 자각을 이끄는데 기여하는 측면에서 생체모방 기술의 발전과 대립하지 않고 상호 보완적으로 발전할 것이다.
