Objectives：This study was performed to analyze behavior problems of autism spectrum disorder patients contributing to parenting stress and quality of life of Autism spectrum disorder(ASD) mothers.
Methods：Participants consisted of 32 autism spectrum disorder patients and their mothers who visited the outpatient department from April 2016 to July 2016 in OO University Hospital. Childhood Autism Rating Scales(CARS), Social Maturity Scales(SMS) and the Korean version of Behavior Problem Inventory(K-BPI) were used to test patients’ behavior problems. Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI), the Korean version of Parenting Stress Index Short Form(K-PSI) and the Korean version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument(K-QOL) were used to test ASD mothers’ level of depression, anxiety, life stress and quality of life.
Results：General and social relation domains of QOL were most declined in mothers of the early adolescents with the ASD. The frequency of self-injurious behavior showed significant correlations with the parent-child dysfunctional interaction and difficult child domains of the K-PSI as well as the psychological domain of the K-QOL. The frequency of stereotyped behavior demonstrated significant correlations with the psychological and physical domains of the K-QOL.
Conclusion：This study demonstrates that the assessment of the mothers’ emotional status is necessary in treating patients with the ASD. It also shows that aggressive interventions are needed to reduce the frequencies of the stereotyped behavior and self-injurious behavior of the ASD patients, as well as the social support to lower the stress of the parents of adult ASD patients.
