The 1990s have seen the continued development of the world convention market, whether in the context of tourism development or urban revitalization investment. Over the past decades, growth of the meeting and convention industry has enhanced an awareness of its social and economic significance to cities, regions and nations. However, competition for the international convention market has been tightened. Attendees are also becoming more concerned with the quality of convention services, and taking steps to ensure that the money and opportunity cost invested in convention is well spent. To meet this demand for quality convention service and gain competitiveness in international market, careful consideration must be given to the facilities and services provided during international meetings or conventions. One of the important issues in this industry is to identify the convention-service related attributes that may have an important implication for evaluating successful meetings. Very little academic attention, however, has been given to this topic so far. The purpose of this study is to stimulate increased academic interest in this fertile field by developing a conceptual evaluation model of convention service quality together with some broad research propositions. Research in this area has the potential to contribute substantially to improved quality services. The results could be used to gain more understanding of important attributes that convention organizers and attendees use in evaluating the quality of the convention service, and provide guidance for designing professional convention services.
