Research has shown that in non-native vowel discrimination, adult listeners perform asymmetrically according to direction of stimulus change. The purpose of this study is to explore these perceptual patterns in light of two relevant conceptual perspectives: the Natural Referent Vowel (NRV) framework and the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM). Korean listeners were tested with six English vowel contrasts in an identification task with category goodness ratings and a discrimination task. The identification task revealed 2 category-goodness (CG), 2 uncategorized-uncategorized (UU) and 2 uncategorized-categorized (UC) assimilation types. The discrimination task revealed that discrimination of the more to less peripheral vowel shifts was poorer than the reverse vowel shifts with only one exception. These discrimination asymmetries support the NRV notion of a peripherality bias whereby peripheral vowels serve as natural referent vowels. With respect to assimilation types, directional asymmetries arose for UU and CG contrasts, consistent with PAM. However, directional asymmetries were also observed for UC contrasts, inconsistent with PAM. These findings are discussed in terms of identification overlap. Implications for the two conceptual models on directional asymmetries are also discussed.
