This study investigates the vowel duration and vowel space differences between words with contrastive focus and those with old information. The target vowels were /i, ɪ, ɛ, æ, ɑ, ɔ, ʊ, and u/. In the speech of native English speakers, the inherently long vowels were significantly longer in focused words. The short vowels, such as /ɪ and ʊ/, did not have significant durational differences between focused words and words with old information. In the speech of Korean learners of English, the back vowels /ɔ, ʊ, and u/ were significantly longer in words with contrastive focus, even if the durational differences were smaller than those of native English speakers. Concerning vowel space, native English speakers realized the lowering of the high and mid-high vowels and the retraction of the back vowels in focused words. The Korean learners of English lowered the high front and the mid-high vowels in focused words. The Korean learners’ data showed more expanded vowel space with the fronting of front vowels and the retraction of back vowels in words with old information, as compared with the production data of the native English speakers. Less variability in the vowel duration and characteristic vowel space in the speech of Korean learners of English reflects the transfer of Korean prosody and vowel inventory.
