The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of sport in modem capitalistic society with which both Allen Guttman, in From Ritual to Record(1978), and Bero Rigauer, in Sport and Work(1981), are concerned. The characteristics of sport as conceived in both books offer a basic framework for interpreting the sporting body. First, I state that according to Foucault`s conception of the body, self-destructive use of the body is reinforced through the continued sport pattern of manipulation; alienation, and the abuse of power. Second, in discussing the sporting body within the capitalistic society, sport carried by the body is incorporated into and reproduced in sport, which is itself a form of social production structured as culture. The social-cultural value expressed in achievement ideology transforms the athletic body into a commodity, or an instrument that has value only if it can help the team win the game. The athlete`s body for example, is a commodity that is sold to sponsors, advertisers, and the consuming public to generate profit. In conclusion, in all sport the body is an instrument of production. If sport is controlled by the social ideology of achievement, then the body is transformed into machine and commodity.
