Since de Wette, the relationship between Deuteronomy and 2 Kings 22-23, which is King ]osiah"s reform report, has been one of the main topics in the modern Old Testament study. There have been various arguments on the textual history of King ]osiah’s Temple purification report in 2 Kings 23: 4, 6 - 7, which reports King] osiah’s first reform. Some scholars regard this text as Dtrl redaction, others as DtrH.
In this study, the writer traces the textual and literary history of this report through etymological， lexical, and exegetical study, and thus checks the validity of scholars" arguments which has been proposed since de Wette.
The writer here shows that verse 6a, which describes Asherah’s being removed from the Temple and cast out to the brook Kidron outside ]erusalem, belonged to the primary material of ]osiah’s Temple purification.
The writer finally reveals that Deuteronomic redactionallayer like verses 4aba, 6b, and 7 and post-Deuteronomic layer like 4bß has been gradually added to those older material so that the story of the Temple purification develops towards the removal of foreign cultic elements from]erusalem Temple.
The writer shows the relationship between the Deuteronomic redaction and ]eremiah,especially paying attention to such terminologies in the text as "the high priest: "the priests of the second order,’ ‘the keepers of the threshold,’ ‘the Temple ofYahweh,’ and ‘the fields of the Kidron,’ the relationship between this text and the book of ]eremiah, and the historical background of the terminologies.
The writer finally reveals that in verse 4bß the post-Deuteronomic redactor tries to connect the statement on ]osiah’s reform in ]erusalem (2 Kgs 23:4-14) and the report of reform in Bethel (vss, 15-20).
