This study focused on the formation and usage of the Youngju(營州) route in Balhae. It is generally understood that Balhae had five major routes and Youngju route played a role in going to Dang(唐). And it is common that the Youngju area had not been used since the latter part of the 8th century because it was no longer under Dang`s control. But this study raises questions from these existing perspectives.
Firstly, Youngju route has been formed by inheriting the road from Youngju to Liaotung Sinseong during the Koguryo period and expanding to the Whibalwha river.
Secondly, Youngju route was not only used as a pathway to Dang, but it was a channel that enabled pluralistic diplomacy by exchanging with the Northern tribes.
These events such as East migration before the founding of Balhae, the exchange with the Turks, and the Battle of Madosan(馬都山) were all based on the Youngju route.
In addition, I revised the mistakes amomg the documents related to the Battle of Madosan. Through this work, it was confirmed that Balhae performed the battle of Madosan in 733 and moved troop through the Youngju route.
Thirdly, Balhae quickly became aware of the rapidly changing situation by using Youngju route at the time of An · Sa(安史) rebellion and led the diplomacy with Japan by using the information obtained.
Fourth, it is pointed out that Youngju route was used during the entire period of Balhae, based on the archaeological results such as Goeu(高爾) mountain fortress and Somil(蘇密) fortress.
Finally, for the advanced understanding of Youngju route, I propose the follow-up study on the interchange with the Sogdian and look forward to the archeological research on the Northern parts of Youngju route.
