Siga Naoya’s Anyakouro is a story about “Family Romance”. The main character is looking for reasons why he is not loved by his parents. He defines himself as a “private child”. Anyakouro is a growing novel, portraying the process whereby people try to escape from the tragedy which arose due to “private children”. He wants to establish himself. In Anyakouro, “noble father” does not appear like in “Family Romance” in Western Europe. Instead, a “bad father” appears, which is a way to avoid “patricide”. Instead of directly confronting the father who is causing conflict, they are avoiding the “patricide” by organizing their relationship easily. Instead of “paternal murder,” they try to build a happy home through their desire for what they call “mother”. This kind of growth is a Japanese style, which is a “motherly society,” and why Anyakouro is called a “Japanese-style growth novel.” Growth in the Anyakouro style is based on a sense of unity with a mother, not a father-killer, like in Western “Family Romance”. In conclusion, Anyakouro is a novel by “Family Romance” that shows even its Japanese Bildungsroman.
