Recently, the existence of vehicle control functions for vehicle stability enhancement is becoming the main factor of customers’ vehicle choice. It means that the main factor for purchasing vehicles depends on not only the powertrain performance, but also the chassis controls performance for vehicle stability enhancement. The essential precondition for matching with this customer’s demand is directly connected to reliable brake performance with high performance of chassis systems. For this reason, many automobile manufacturer are trying to compensate the hardware-wise limitation and secure the strong performance of brake systems by using value added functions of ESC.
Brake Pre-fill function is one of value added functions of ESC, it detects driver’s brake pedal input in advance and adds the decided brake pressure at each brake corner module prior to the driver’s actual brake input for compensation of brake response time at emergency braking situation. Reduction of brake response time means the function can decrease vehicle collision probability by driver’s brake input delay at emergency braking situation so the function is very meaningful for enhancement of vehicle stability performance and it becomes more effective at high speed braking in particular. But if the function adds excessive brake pressure to bring brake response time into focus, then customers can complain the different brake pedal feeling while Brake Pre-fill function activates. For this reason, the balance between brake response time and brake pedal feeling is essential factor for the function implementation of Brake Pre-fill.
In this paper, we evaluated the function effectiveness of Brake Pre-fill by actual vehicle tests and confirmed the brake system with Brake Pre-fill function can secure the brake performance at emergency braking situation.
