This study examines the ways in which East Asian medicine exists in the healthcare institutions of nation-states. In particular, this issue is discussed through an examination of Sa-am acupuncture in Korean medicine in South Korea. Sa-am acupuncture comprises multiple approaches, such as “Keumo,” “Weolo,” and the “Eight Constitutions.” These approaches reflect the flexibility of Sa-am acupuncture, as the practice has diversified, responding to social, historical, and physiological changes since the Joseon Dynasty, when Sa-am acupuncture was first established. This study’ s ethnographic investigation suggests that changes in the practice of Sa- am acupuncture resulted from responses to increased emotional problems in contemporary society and the hegemony of biomedical concepts and the identification of diseases. Integration with other medical theories, such as Sasang medicine, also has led to the diversification of the practice of acupuncture. East Asian medicine has often been regarded as occupying a lower position within the healthcare institutions of nation-states. Relying on its flexibility, however, traditional medicine has endured as a sustainable practice. The practices of Sa-am acupuncture destabilize the dualisms of the traditional and the modern as well as the static and the progressive.
