In this study, we propose an interaction method for 3D object manipulation designed for the Google Cardboard interface. The user input is limited by the capturable values from the custom HMD, which include the single button input (touching the phone screen) and the gazing point controlled by the head motion. The proposed method is named as “GaZekewer” combining two words, gazing and skewer, to highlight its function for selection technique of overlapped 3D objects. It also has translation and scaling functionalities encoded with different types of head motion. We conducted a pilot study using a select-and-dock task with various configurations of input scheme to test the user’s performance and satisfaction. Variations in control configurations restrict users to certain motions to evaluate their effectiveness. From a quantitative analysis, we found a difference among configurations of interaction method in terms of execution time and amount of head motion. The resulting qualitative evaluation reflected positive reviews and promising feedback on the usability of our interaction method. The proposed “GaZekewer” interaction method shows potential for intuitive interaction with object manipulation tasks using Google Cardboard VR under its limited forms of user input.
