The purpose of this study is to show that there are systematic differences in pitch change on the tonic syllable that happens to occur at the beginning of an intonational phrase (IP) in English, and to claim that those pitch change phenomena can be effectively taught using a set of generalizations. In the discussion only attitude/emotion-neutral utterances are considered to avoid extralinguistic intricacies and instead to concentrate on meaningful linguistic phenomena worth teaching for English nonnatives. This study first employs the autosegmental model of Goldsmith (1976) to examine the links between the tone(s) and the IP-initial tonic syllable and then presents the rules that reflect the findings from the examination: If the tonic syllable is IP-initial, depending on whether the original tone melody given to the IP is rising or rising-falling, there occur different changes in tone-text association. This study further shows how those pitch changes can be taught to Korean English learners by using the traditional American style of describing intonation, which they would ordinarily get used to with ease.
