This article discusses how, in “-eoteot-” compositions, “-eot₁-” indicates the tense and aspect of the composition, specifically the past and perfect tenses, while “-eot₂-” denotes the certainty of the speaker regarding the relevant fact. In this grammaticalization process, the scope of “-eot-” expands from simply representing the tense to indicating the aspect as well. This study viewed it as denoting “certainty” in terms of modality in a new sense. In other words, the certainty denoted by “-eot-” was created by expanding from the past and perfect tense. Through the semantic areas, i.e., “certainty”, “recognition”, “awareness”, and “assumption”, “-eot₂-” implies certainty in “-eoteot-,” and involvement of “-eot₂-” in [proposition+eot] produces a modal meaning, specifically, “certainty”, “-eot-” contains the aspect of “certainty” and indicates the conclusion of an event that already took place. Moreover, based on the metaphor-metonymy model and re-analysis, the grammaticalization of “-eot-” and the process through which the modality acquires meaning can be explained.
