The main purpose of this paper is to examine the semantic change in [in the wake of] and [in the aftermath of] in terms of grammaticalization. The two complex prepositions in the construction form of [in (the) N of] are used to indicate the semantic meaning of a consequence or effect. In this paper, we will explain the grammatical change of the two phrases from the concrete meaning to the abstract meaning of consequence in two aspects: qualitative and quantitative. First, qualitatively using the data from Oxford English Dictionary, we trace the diachronic change with the grammaticalization mechanisms and principles. Secondly, to identify the frequency of the two phrases, a quantitative method is used with the help of corpora. Through the analysis of frequency, the specialization in genre of the two complex prepositions is also confirmed.
