Asia is considered having security problem and lacking solidarity on regional level. According to this view, expansion and deepening of democracy are essential to reduce security risks and enhance solidarity. The Nordic region is the most important case for the democratic peace. Historical rivalry and conflicts between Denmark and Sweden, the independence movements of Nordic small countries (Norway, Finland, Iceland) in the 20th century, and the legacy of colonialism could make cooperation and peace nearly impossible in the region. The Nordic peace was fulfilled in very difficult historical, political, and external environments. Not only Sweden’s neutrality but also the democratic accomplishments of Norway and Finland were crucial for the region’s peace. Analyzing institutional and social dimensions of the democratic peace, the paper argues that Japan’s peace constitution and Korea-Japan’s democratic peace alliance are essential since only democracy and socially constructed intrinsic pacifism would bring peace to the Korean Peninsula and the Northeast Asia.
