This study examined the impact of playing video games on how likely someone perceives the self, operationalized by the perception of future event that could occur. One hundred twenty one participants role-played in one of four conditions using three different games varying in primary roles. These roles included a server and a manager with a different emphasis on which was most essential. Consistent with prior research on social influence and social roles, playing the role of a server led participants to report that they were more likely to see themselves as a server in the future. In addition, players who perceived that they took the role of a manager reported that they were more likely to become a manager in the future. Participants low in their identification with the server or manager avatar displayed a weaker relation between the role and their future. Implications for social influence and media effects were discussed.
