The study is a pragmatic analysis of speech acts in Ag. President Yemi Osinbajo’s Democracy Day Address delivered on the 29th of May, 2017 at the Nigerian State House Abuja. This descriptive study adopts a two-way illocutionary and perlocutionary acts analysis employing qualitative and quantitative methods and derived its theoretical basis from Speech Acts Theory. Searle’s (1969) and Allan’s (1994) speech acts classifications were used to analyze illocutionary acts in the address. Perlocutionary analysis was done using readers reactions to the address sampled on the comments feed of the verified Facebook pages of four news sources. Findings from the study reveal that the Ag. President used more statement speech acts as they accounted for 73.3% of the address while there were no declaratives in entire address. However, perlocutionary analysis of the address reveals that majority of the hearers/readers (69%) see the address as a mere ‘speech’ as it proffered no solution to the challenges bedeviling the hearers/readers. Allan’s (1998) questions were used to examine the illocutionary acts using perlocutionary reactions and all the illocutionary acts examined were adjudged infelicitous.
