Britain`s recognition of her status in international political and economic stage had been dramatically changed since the Suez Crisis in 1956. With her new conception of her relationship with the USA, the Commonwealth and Europe came new methods of conducting international relations, in particular the pratice of holding frequent meetings between heads of government. Macmillan`s visit to the USA and France as a planed., step to enter the Europe was therefore no surprise to British politicians and public in late 1962. However, the `Nassau agreement` of December 1962 between President Kennedy and Prime Minister Macmillan had a marked influenced on President de Gaulle. Some observers believed that it was at this point that the French president decided to switch from delaying tactics to outright veto of Britain`s entry into the Common Market. The Rambouillet Meetings between Macmillan and de Gaulle in December 1962, from the perspectives of the British Government, was, therefore, failed. This eventually led Macmillan Government to very difficult position and Britain`s European policy has to change to accept general circumstances around her. This lacks of understanding cooperation between negotiators and key decision makers from both Britain and France might be misled Britain`s fate in Europe. This article tries to explain the general background of European integration movement negotiation of early 1960s between British Prime Minister and French President, and international relations between both European and international super powers.
