Kuhn’s notion of paradigm(s) plays a key role in his philosophy of science. In this essay, first of all, I raise the question of why Kuhn introduced the new jargon “paradigm” into the philosophical discussion of science. Among many considerations potentially relevant to this question, I pay special attention to two problems, i.e. the problem of specialization and that of acquiring learned similarities. And I point out that the then-mainstream philosophy of science failed to recognize these problems, and furthermore, that it did not seem to have conceptual resources for dealing with them. So I suggest that these negative findings and assessments were major considerations that led Kuhn to introduce his notion of paradigm(s), which seemed to him apt to handle these challenging issues. I admit that Kuhn’s notion of paradigms as exemplars has some potential to solve these problems, but claim that his theory of paradigms remains less than satisfactory and has its own limitation. I investigate the source of such a limitation and a prospective way of overcoming it in the light of the contemporary psychological research on concepts. In doing so, I tentatively accept what I call the Minimal Heterogeneity Hypothesis. Then I suggest that paying more attention to models and their roles in scientific inquiry will help us to overcome or at least alleviate the limitation of Kuhn’s theory of paradigms, and I argue for it.
