It has been 20 years since the introduction of the local government system. It has enabled the efficient management of the central and local government. In addition, it became an opportunity to preserve the characteristics of the region. The local government system led to the development of local festivals.
Local festivals harmonize citizens, strengthen community consciousness and attract tourists. It has a positive effect on the regional revitalization. These positive effects of local festivals were enough to attract the attention of many municipalities after the introduction of local government system. As a result, the number of local festivals in Korea has increased exponentially with the introduction of the local government system.
However, due to the overheated aspects of local festivals, local festivals in the Republic of Korea are losing their local identities and being criticized by similar programs and performances not related to the their identity.
The purpose of this study is to review the role of the local festival through the diversity of festival contents especially before and after the introduction of the local government system and makes it possible to enhance the role of the local festival today.
