The purpose of this study is to identify a better way of implementing policies for preschool children in Gyeonggi-do’s multicultural family, the proportion of which reaches nearly 5% of all preschool population. Considering the development of multicultural policies in South Korea over a decade, we focus on how those supporting efforts have been practiced upon preschool children in Gyeonggi-do. To do so, we visit the several multicultural family support centers and six multicultural kindergartens. During our visit, we conduct focus groups including managers, teachers, and parents and analyze their perspectives.
This study concludes some suggestions. First, Korean society as a whole should make a serious effort to reduce prejudice against preschool children whose background is multicultural or multiracial. Second, give that it is desirable to promote equity in education, multifaceted supports based on public-private partnership at the local level are crucial to achieve this goal. Last, preschool education in South Korea should pay more attention to teaching the essence of multiculturalism, especially finding a way to disseminating the value of being diverse through mutual understandings.
