The paper compares the concept EAT in Korean and English regarding which of the four stages of the eating process - intake, mastication, swallowing, and digestion - is most frequently utilized in metaphorical conceptualization. In Choi (2017), it has been revealed that in English, the mastication stage is most highly perspectivized, based on the investigation of the corpus COCA. The most commonly observed metaphorical meanings are, therefore, related to the mastication stage: "to bother," "to destroy," and "to eliminate as the result of the destruction." Based on the previous findings, this paper examines the same concept EAT in Korean through the corpus of NIKL (National Institute of the Korean Language). The result shows that, in Korean, the intake stage is the most frequently used in metaphors, and thus the most common metaphorical meanings are "to accept," "to add," and "to possess." While the two languages highlight different stages of eating in metaphorical conceptualization, they are similar in that they both focus on the negative aspects of the concept EAT in metaphors. In English, negative meanings related to the destructive nature of the mastication stage are most frequently observed. In Korean, the negative aspects of the intake stage are emphasized in meanings such as "to possess immorally" and "to experience something bad."
