The present study has investigated the metaphorical perceptions of first-year Chinese students toward their English learning experience before college. Metaphors were collected using the prompt “English learning was (like) … because ….” and analyzed qualitatively by Elicited Metaphor Analysis. The results revealed four types of metaphors: work, journey, leisure, and necessity. Regardless of metaphor types, the students tended to perceive English learning as a slow, hardworking process leading to a sense of accomplishment and personal growth as well as language development. As for attitudes toward English learning, the students generally conceived of learning English as a highly challenging endeavor with ultimately worthwhile outcomes.
