The process of art exchange between China and North Korea in 1950s can be divided into three periods. The first period coincides with the establishment of People’s Republic of China and the Korean War(1949-1953). China and North Korea, the new socialist republics of Asia converted the art world into models of the Soviet Union. However, with the participation of China in the Korean War, bilateral relations developed into "blood brother", and more than 40 Chinese artists were dispatched to North Korea to record battlefields. The sketches produced by Chinese painters were published as painting album, especially the Sketches of Battlefield in North Korea(󰡔朝鮮戰場速寫󰡕) was translated into Chosôn Chônjang Soksa in Korean and distributed to North Korea.
The second phase is the period of post Korean War(1953-1958). The art exchanges between two countries were regularized through the "Economic and Cultural Agreement between China and North Korea(中·朝經濟文化合作協定)". The prominent artists of north Korea Chông Kwanch’ôl(鄭寬徹), Kil Chinsôp(吉鎭燮), Kim Yongjun(金瑢俊) and Kim Chugyông(金周經) visited China as a member of "North Korean Delegation to China(訪華代表團)" and contacted Chinese artists. In 1956, Kim Chugyông and Kim Yongjun visited China once again to learn chinese educational system. On the Chinese side, the cartoonist Ding Cong(丁聰), the ink painter Jiang Zaohe(蔣兆和), the woodblock printer Shen Rujin(沈柔堅) and the cartoonist Jiang Yousheng(江有生) visited North Korea and made extensive contact with the North Korean art world. Especially Jiang Yousheng organized the "Exhibition of Chinese Cartoons(中國漫畵展覽會)" held in July, 1957 with a great success.
The third phase coincide with the period of "Great Leap Forward" and "Ch’ôllima"(1958-1962). China and North Korea made a considerable effort to establish national style of social realism art with a certain distance from the Soviet style. The "Exhibition of Plastic Art in North Korea(朝鮮造型藝術展覽會)" held in Beijing in 1959 informed China of North Korean style socialist art. The representative ink painter Chông Chong’yô(鄭鍾汝), who had curated the whole exhibition, traveled the city of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Guangzhou next year and learned well known chinese artists Feng Zikai(豊子愷), Guan Shanyue(關山月). In order to demonstrate the political achievements after the Korean War, Chinese government produced war monuments such as "Cemetery Park for Fallen Soldiers in Korean War" and "The Tower of Friendship" in Pyôngyang, and Cho Kyubong(曺圭奉) and Yi Koedae(李快大) participated in building these monuments.
