This study aims to examine how Ernest Hemingway’s aesthetics of ‘I-Thou’ is formed in his works, especially For Whom the Bell Tolls. Known as an important way emphasized by Martin Buber’s ’Encounter’ philosophy, ‘I-Thou’ is a spirit compared to ‘I-It’ with which people are regarded as a tool, making people see others for the purpose. This Buber’s philosophy seems to be embodied in the action of Hemingway who affects Robert Jordan’s humanity.
In this novel, the dissipated and decadent lifestyle that Hemingway’s heroes had shown us in his early works has disappeared and the new issues such as the problem of existence or the importance of unity in human life have emerged. Jordan, one of Hemingway’s code heroes, fights to realize humanity which only can make this world peaceful beyond a fanatically ideological dispute. His effort to meet people in Spain with the spirit of ‘I-Thou’, based on love, leads us to think that the top priority in our lives is the humanity with which we can make our world better, kinder, and more cohesive beyond various political ideologies and social contradictions that make intrinsic value of human being disregarded.
