“Baekhaphwa” was published by certain seminary students in 1957 to be used in churches, and as such it is the collection of then popular hymnal lyrics. The compilation intention can be confirmed in the foreword of the book, saying that, at that time, although Korean Church had an officially published hymnbook, the church field needed a popular collection of hymns for church members to easily sing from. “Baekhaphwa” lists only lyrics without musical notes, and has lyrics with both the lyric writers and musical notes specified or unspecified.
“Baekhaphwa” is a precious Christian cultural heritage that connects the history of Protesta-gasa(歌辭). Following religious-gasa which began to be popular from the second half of Joseon, which consisted of Catholic-gasa and Donghak-gasa, Protestant-gasa began to be propagated in earnest. As an example of Protestant-gasa, the tunes listed in “Baekhaphwa” draw our attention in terms of three points.
First, “Baekhaphwa” is an example of presenting Korean Church’s settlement culture. Second, it is a case of Protestant-gasa being used as part of faith education in then Korean Church. Also, the Protestant-gasa were used as a good textbook for educating about Korean characteristics. Third, hymns, musical notes and contents, which were popular in Korean Church in 1957, can be identified.
When classifying “Baekhaphwa’s” listed hymns by musical note, lyric writer, and content, the diversity of then hymns can be identified. First, the most popular type associated with musical notes is Contrafacta by which different lyrics are linked to musical notes. Also, the listed lyric writers are found to include evangelists, pastors and seminary students. These were field leaders of church and evangelical meetings, and they were the actual field leaders of hymnal ministry.
In terms of contents, most of “Baekhaphwa” tunes are related to faith. Of them, the main contents include the paraphrased contents of biblical stories, counsel and training of the Bible and faith, and encouragement words. However, of the listed tunes, non-faithful tunes are included. For instance, there are lyrics about the grace of mother, and about the difficulty of married women. Also, the hymnbook also lists the campaigns about abstinence from drinking and smoking. These tunes are not directly related to contents of faith, but they apparently played a role of consoling church members about their usual trauma and pain. Also, they offered the then church’s involvement in social purification campaigns, and its concern about Koreans.
Currently, details of biographical items about “Baekhaphwa” cannot be accurately identified, limiting this study. The book has lost the front and back covers, making it necessary to check the important biographical items. With the publication of this paper, we are expecting to hear the information on the biographical items.
