The purpose of this study was to develop the parent education program for enhancing employment capacity of student with disability. In pursuing the purpose of the study, we conducted a literature study and a survey. Through the literature study we investigated the laws related to education for parent of student with disability and the contents of parent education programs. We also surveyed the needs of the parents(292 parents) about education program and analyzed their responses. After setting up a provisional program based on the needs analysis, we conducted in-depth interviews with the parent education specialist. In addition, we ran a trial project. Then we evaluated this trial project and modified the provisional program based on the evaluation.
To take the specific needs of the parent into account, the following issues appeared to be necessary in making the program: short-term intervention of less than 10 hours; promotion of practical support skills to use in collection of career information, resume writing and job interview; parent participation through discussions and activities.
Following the needs analysis, we built a ‘Parent Education Program Focus on Enhancing Employment Capability of Student with Disability’. This program has seven modules. The topics of each module are as follows; Program Orientation; Assessing Your Child; Learning about Jobs; Learning about Employment Practices; Preparing Job-Seeking Documents; Interviewing for a Job; Employment-Stability and Security in Workplace. We made a manual of this program as well. The manual of this program can be a useful guidance for the staffs to make plan and run the program.
