Female garment factory workers formulate the largest concentration of women in the labour force in Sri Lanka. Along with issues faced by women in general these female garment factory workers face issues due to their profession as well. These issues are consequence of the new sub-culture which has emerged surrounding these factories where women are looked upon as mere ‘commodities.’ Despite being instrumental in bringing revenue to the country they are a marginalised group in society. In recent years Governmental, Non-Governmental Organisations and employers have realized the importance of psychosocial interventions in helping these women deal with the problems they face. This paper focuses on how ‘psychological counselling’ which is still looked at with scepticism by the Sri Lankan society is instrumental in empowering and creating mental health wellbeing among female garment factory workers. The paper will also look at the scope of counselling in Sri Lanka and the challenges faced by psychological counsellors in carrying out their work.
