In this essay, I analyze the 1841 murder of a working class New York woman named Mary Rogers and the manner in which two representative writers of the period-Edgar Allan Poe and Lydia Maria Child-engaged her story. The sensational and often dualistic narratives that the penny press coverage provided to the general urban readers give insight into the new arrival of capitalistic mass production system in the urban public space. My central argument focuses on how both these writers present the model of atypical flâneur in their literary retelling of the Rogers case. The figure of the flâneur is a recognizable urban type that emerged during the mid-nineteenth century, who deliberately strolled the city streets and arcades and attempted to discern the meanings of what he observed. In most of the scholarly discussions of the subject, the act of walking along the urban public space formed an essential part of the flâneur’s observational process. In his fullest literary treatment of the media coverage of Rogers murder case, however, Poe presents a paradoxical variant-the “armchair flâneur.” Poe’s armchair flâneur is an observer of the symbolic urban space that the narratives of the modern mass media present to their readers. Child’s female flâneur, on the other hand, aligns herself more akin to the traditional notion of the type as she literally roams around the New York city space. And yet, in her effort to extend the sympathetic act of reading to the public she observes, Child’s female flâneur acknowledges the forgotten or silenced subjects that still haunt the city landscape.
